Off-duty police officer injured while working security at Valley Walmart

PHOENIX AZ June 17 2024  — A Valley police officer was injured after being assaulted by a suspect while they were off-duty and working security at a Walmart, according to Phoenix police.

The department said they were called to the Walmart store near 35th Avenue and Bethany Home Road at about 5:30 p.m. on Friday by the store’s loss prevention team due to an assault.

When officers arrived, they found that a police officer from another jurisdiction was off-duty and working as a security guard at the Walmart store.

That officer and the loss prevention team said they were assaulted by a person who was being removed from the store.

The officer was injured, their injuries were minor, and they were treated at the store. Phoenix police are investigating what led up to the assault. No one involved was identified and Phoenix police did not say what department the off-duty officer works for.
